At the dinner table tonight we were discussing Christmas and why we celebrate Christmas. Keep in mind we just celebrated Simon's birthday over the weekend (and yes, I realize I haven't blogged about that - I'll get to it when I can).
Mama: Did you know that when we celebrate Christmas we're celebrating Jesus' birthday?
Iain: Yes! And I will make him a cake, and take it to him in heaven, and we will eat it and sing "Happy Birthday!"

Iainism: I've got the boy fooled
Iain: Let's watch this movie (holding up latest Disney movie we've picked up from the library).
Daddy: No.
Iain: Why not?
Daddy: Because I don't want to because I'm a mean daddy.
Iain: No, you're not a mean daddy, you're just a great guy.

Iainism: Shark-infested living room
Valerie and I are chatting in the living room and Iain comes dashing in.
Iain: I think there was a noise in the water.
Mama: Oh?
Iain: Yes, it was a shark. But you're okay. runs over to the front door
Iain: Oh, there he is! That's the shark I was looking for.

Iainism: Suckers
Russ and Iain are chatting about trick or treating last night at our ward Halloween party, specifically about a sucker (gotta love the dumdums) that Iain had eaten.
Russ: C'mon sucker, let's go downstairs now.
Iain: No, I'm not a sucker. Um, I kind of look like a carrot.
A few minutes later, while relaying this story to me:
Russ: So, I said, c'mon sucker, let's go downstairs now.
Iain: Um, I'm not a sucker, I'm just a son and a boy.
Bonus: Last night, driving to the Halloween party, we go past a McDonald's. Background - Iain had recently watched "Over The Hedge."
Iain: Hey, it's Over the Hedge
Russ: Okay, that was random, where did that come from?
Iain: From the library.

Too much traveling, an Iainism, and "Simon Says"
Work sent me to South Africa again for about a week last month, which meant that Russ and the boys got to rough it without Mama around. They all survived, thank goodness, but that's a long time to be away! Thank goodness for Skype, right? So on the Saturday that I was there, a couple of co-workers and I went hiking around a nature reserve and got up close and personal with some giraffes, zebras, and a bunch of other African herbivores (no carnivores in this park, since there's no barriers between you and the wildlife), and I told Iain about the animals I saw.
Mama: Guess what I saw today, Iain? I saw punda milia (zebras) and twiga (giraffe)!
Iain: What eats punda milia?
Mama: I don't know, what eats them?
Iain: Simba eat punda milia. And then superman came and got simba in his helicopter.
We also went to Ocean City, MD over the Columbus Day holiday, and the boys loved it. Iain was only brave enough to go in the water a tiny bit, but Simon loved to wade in it.
Iain was content playing in the sand, and they both wore themselves out by the time we went to bed. Since it was off-season (but still perfect weather), we didn't have to fight through any big crowds and while we didn't have the beach to ourselves, it was pretty close.
And now, a new feature in the Knighton Comedy Hour: Simon Says
Daddy: Simon, what's your name?
Simon: little boy
